| Abstract | Since 1900, considerable progress has been achieved in equine colic surgery, both in terms of concept and techniques. In the early 1900’s, pioneers of equine abdominal surgery, as Cadiot, described with great precision some of the fundamental principles which are still valid today. Major advances then occurred in the 60’s and 70’s, with improved control of general anesthesia, more effective perioperative resuscitation due to the use of fluid therapy, the use of ventral midline celiotomy, and the advent of specific tools such as automatic staplers. During the past two decades, medical and interventional imaging, such as transparietal abdominal ultrasonography and especially laparoscopy, led to further significant improvements. Finally, surgery is no longer just curative and is now also used to prevent certain acute digestive tract conditions. |
