| Abstract | A decision tree is a powerful multivariate technique that is used for both data exploration and prediction. Since many SAS programmers do not have access to the SAS modules that create trees and have not had a chance to use them this paper will have two purposes. The primary purpose will be to compare trees in two different software packages. This will be done in an appendix and will be sufficient for people who are familiar with trees. However, many people will not be familiar with trees and not be able to understand that table without some explanation of the concepts and terms. The paper itself will explain concepts associated with trees so that when the comparisons are made, they are more easily understood. As an aside: given the rapid pace of development of SAS products, it is likely that the table will soon be obsolete and the long-term benefit from this effort the background information in the paper. |
