ABSTRACT The processes triggered from the sixteenth century, as a result of the European presence in the River Plate region, have generally been approached from the local vision and perspective of the conqueror all of which has often hampered understanding of the many aspects involved. With regard to the so-called Banda Oriental – the eastern part of what would be the River Plate Viceroyalty- we can see the decisive occurrence of particular factors that affects the native peoples in the area. As a consequence of their influence we can appreciate certain events and processes, specific in many cases which differ from those observed in the rest of the territories. One of them is the particular situation that exists in the borderland as a result of the continuous succession of armed or peaceful disputes between the Iberian kingdoms. In this way the indigenous society is forced to take part of the struggles and transformed direct or inderectly by the overcoming stakes. On one hand, slavery supported by Brazil in the XVI and the early XVIII centuries, a fact that involves the eastern part of the territory in a different way; on the other hand, the situation of the borderland imposed by the acting empires in the XVII and the XVIII leads to the configuration of an exclusion area with an heterogeneous population that could not result in a proper Indian one, being just a complex miscellany of miscegenation, trade, evasion and conspiracy, topics that have hardly been addressed so far by the local historiography. Key words : Banda Oriental; Native Peoples; border studies. |
