Abstract	Background and objective: Polycystic ovarian syndrome is an endocrine disorder common among women at reproductive age that appears to be related to risk factors for the development of cardiovascular disease. This study aims to know witch of these risk factors associated with polycystic ovary syndrome. Method: A case-control study involving patients attended at a school clinic, from January 2010 to December 2015. All patients with polycistic ovarian syndrome composed the cases, while a random selection among patients without the syndrome was performed to compose the controls, resulting in the analysis of 168 medical records. The association of independent variables with the presence of polycystic ovarian syndrome was studied through odds ratio calculations and their respective confidence intervals, with significance level p < 0.05. Logistic regression was performed to improve the results of the variables with p < 0,20. Results: Among the population, 83 cases and 85 controls were identified. The mean age was 28.8 (± 7.1) years, with the majority of patients with white skin color (91.7%). Patients with polycystic ovary syndrome were 3.23 times more likely (95% CI 1.61; 6.49) to present obesity (p = 0.001) and 2.48 times more chance (95% CI 1.25; 4.91) to present HDL-cholesterol ≤ 50 mg/dl (p = 0.010). The other studied variables did not present statistical difference between patients with or without polycystic ovary syndrome after binary regression.
