| Abstract | Some Factors Leadhg to Delays in the Diagnosis of Leprosy This study sought to estimate how long it takes to establish a definite diagnosis of leprosy, how long patients wait to go to a physician after noticing the first symptoms of the disease, and how knowledgeable health persormel are about leprosy. Research was carried out in the cities of Havana and Guantánamo, where the preva3 lence of the disease is moderate and high, respectively. The participants were all leprosy paN tients diagnosed in 1989 and 1990 in the two 3 cities. Data on the patients were obtained from ul their clinical histories and from their responses N w to a questionnaire prepared according to the criteria of severa1 experts. Data on health personnel was obtained through interviewing a sample of health professionals that included specialists and residents in interna1 medicine, dermatology, gynecology and obstetrics, as well as family doctors and specialized muses from the Leprosy Control Program. In Havana 971 professionals were interviewed and in Guantánamo, 139. The delay in diagnosis in Havana was 16.6 months and in Guantánamo, 10.7 months. In Havana the physicians took an average of 15.6 months to establish the diagnosis and in Guantánamo, 5 months. In Havana the patients waited an average of 1 month before going to a physician versus 5.7 months in Guantánamo. The health personnel in Guantánamo had greater knowledge of the disease than those in Havana. The authors recommend that educational interventions be carried out using different strategies in each City. |
