| Abstract | The work presented in this thesis aims to investigate the consolidation of soils accelerated by vertical drains taking creep into account. Creep – deformation under constant applied stresses has a significant influence on soft clayey soils because of their high compressibility. The large settlements resulting from loading this type of soils often require the introduction of artificial processes to accelerate soil consolidation, such as vertical drains (made of sand or artificial materials) in order to minimize the post-construction settlements. For this study, several analyses were carried out in PLAXIS calculation program, a finite element method (FEM) based geotechnical numerical tool. The study considers axisymmetric soil units with variable height and diameter, and analyses pure vertical consolidation, pure radial consolidation and combined. Two soil types were considered: a soft clay with creep and without creep, which were reproduced using the Soft Soil and Soft Soil Creep Model, respectively. To materialize the vertical drain two approaches were considered: using the “drain” boundary condition available in PLAXIS and model the drain using solid elements to which a very high permeability is specified. The results from the finite elements analyses are compared with the available theoretical solutions: Terzaghi‟s vertical consolidation, Barron's radial consolidation and Carrillo‟s theorem for estimating the average degree of consolidation for simultaneous vertical and radial consolidation. Finally the equivalence of considering a soil unit in asymmetry and under plane strain is investigated; the latter is frequently needed to analyze many boundary value problems. The results suggest that creep, while not accounted for in most theoretical solutions widely used in engineering practice, have a considerable effect on the magnitude of settlements resulting from the consolidation of clayey soils. |
