| Abstract | The purpose of this study is to test an alternative use for quartzite mining wastes in the Southwest of the State of Minas Gerais as base and sub-base layers of flexible pavements. The adoption of this alternative will not only reduce environmental impacts of quartzite mining but will also increase the value of the quartzite, mainly for road applications. The quartzites of this research came from the Southwest of the State of Minas Gerais, where are the cities Alpinopolis, Sao Jose da Barra, Sao Joao Batista do Gloria and Guape. Mixtures of quartzite wastes with the most common soils in this region (ferrosol) were studied. These quartzites were characterized and aggregate-soil mixtures were prepared, using two types of aggregate gradation: a gap-graded gradation, in accordance with Nogami e Villibor (1994 and 1995), and a dense-graded gradation, in accordance with traditional stabilization criteria. Compaction, California bearing ratio and resilient modulus tests were performed. Results indicate that there is no expressive influence of the quartzite gradation on mixture mechanical properties. It was also verified that it is possible to use these dense-graded mixtures for road applications. This conclusion is valuable from the operational and environmental point of view, as it leads to a full reuse of quartzite wastes. |
