| Abstract | The present work evaluates the water quality of the Portoviejo River (Manabí, Ecuador), by applying the water quality index under the methodology proposed by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF). The points where the index was determined were selected from previously obtained results using a mathematical model and its estimation was carried out by the sampling of physical-chemical and microbiological parameters. Regardless of the fact that only one of the indicators evaluated exceeds the values established by the maximum permissible limits (LMP), the obtained results show that the quality of water decreases as the river travels along the path of its channel, due to the high contaminant load coming from the discharge of waste water and the reduction of its capacity of self-purification. |
