Abstract	This dissertation analyses the relationship between free trade, competition policy and consumer protection in the political economy of Mercosur. It deals with the problem of low emphasis given to the intergovernamental negotiations on competition and consumer defenses in a growing protectionist context. With a pluralist approach on regionalism, it explains the role of the member states in the Southern Cone, focusing the integration’s commercial aspects with implications to business competition and consumers’ welfare. It analyses the optimized relation between State and market in the creation of the necessary conditions to the prosperity maximization of the societies involved. It evaluates the evolution of antitrust and consumer policies and their sub-regional projections. It concludes that the promotion of commercial liberalism represents the main potential contribution of Mercosur to increase free competition and to improve the sub-regional consumption market.
