| Abstract | Maize is a crop of great socioeconomic importance for Brazil, mainly for the Northeast region. However, grain yield is strongly as affected by the low soil fertility and by the water deficit that occurred throughout the crops. Among the essential elements to plants, nitrogen (N) is one of the nutrients that most influences on the productivity and the production components of this cereal. Thus, the present study had the objective of evaluate the agronomic performance of maize grown in four sowing seasons and submitted to four N rates. The research was carried out under field conditions at the Agricultural Sciences Academic Unit of the Federal University of Alagoas, In Rio Largo, region of the Coastal Tabuleiros of Alagoas, Brazil. The experimental design used was in randomized blocks, in the split plots scheme. In the plots, composed of twenty rows with seven meters in length, the sowing (S) seasons (28/05 = S1; 11/06 = S2; 25/06 = S3 and 22/07/2014 = S4) and the five rows subplots the N rates (0, 75, 150, 225 kg ha) as urea. Rainfall occurred during the experimental period was 457, 476, 478 and 583 mm at sowing seasons S1, S2, S3 and S4, respectively The variables analyzed were: grain mass, ear length, number of ear per plant, ear diameter, mass of 1,000 grains and grain yield. Only the mass of 1,000 grains presented a linear correlation with the increase of N rate at all sowing times, while the 2 degree polynomial equation presented better adjustments for the other variables analyzed. N rates influenced positively on the length and diameter of the ear, as well as the grain mass per ear maize. The maximum estimated grain yield was 9.55 t ha, achieved with the application of 209 kg N ha, with sowing until 06/11. |
