| Abstract | The prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STI) is considered essential prevent especially the trajectory of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome‟s (AIDS) epidemic, being the condom one of the safest ways to prevent not only STIs, but also unwanted pregnancy. A government proposal to, among other objectives, aims to the promotion of sexual and reproductive rights and prevention of STIs among adolescents is the project and Saúde e Prevenção nas Escolas (SPE). Focusing in this context, this research sought to understand the perceptions, knowledge and practices related to the use and access to male condoms by young people, from the perception of high school students from a public school in the city of Campo Grande, MS, their mothers and health and education professionals of the region, and possible influences of the project SPE in this context. It is a descriptive, exploratory and quantitative and qualitative approach. Study participants were high school students, who answered a questionnaire and focus groups; mothers, health and education professionals, who were interviewed. The results obtained through questionnaires were put through statistical analysis, and the statements collected through interviews and focus groups were organized, systematized and analyzed by content analysis. It was found that students with active sex life sometimes do not use condoms and many reported embarrassment acquire them at basic health units (a.k.a UBS). Also, misconceptions regarding the correct procedure of condom use were found. Most students, mothers, health and education professionals agree to facilitating access to condoms for adolescents and young people, including school environment, particularly if it is linked to other educational strategies.The results also indicate that the project SPE contributes to the expansion of knowledge related to the proper use of condoms, and access to it by young people. This project also brings up the perception of professionals directly involved with the real needs of adolescents and young people leading to more effective strategies in ensuring sexual and reproductive rights, especially with regard to the access to condoms. |
