English1852 can be considered the year in which the contemporary iron mining in Eastern Almeria was started. However, it was since 1856 when the activity increased noticeably, in the aftermath of patenting new procedures for the steel manufacture on an industrial scale that required iron without phosphorus, such as that of the eastern Almeria. From Carboneras to Pulpi, throughout the entire coastline, several iron mines close to the coast were exploited, and this is because the low iron value in the market caused the mines had to be located a distance near the boarding point, no further than 2-3 km to make them economically feasible. The mined ore, which was highly demanded by the european steel companies, became known at that time as «mineral de La Garrucha», by reason of it was an exporting reference harbour. This iron ore was considered by its physico-chemical properties one of the best iron mineral in the world, which made it suitable for steel production. |
