Abstract	The present work has as objective to determine the variability of the methods of calves rising in dual purpose grazing cattle in the "Alberto Torrealba" county, Barinas state. The information was taken from 18 dual-purpose cattle farms, from 1998 to 1999. There were characterized three methods of calves rising by suckling: 1) calf support and a suckling period of 30 minutes post-milking once a day, 2) calf support and two suckling periods of 30 minutes each per day, and 3) two suckling periods of 30 minutes post-milk per day. Data were analyzed through an analysis of variance for all the studied variables. Weight at weaning, daily weight gain, and the calf mortality index in the three different methods showed significantly differences (P<0.05). Weight gain from birth to weaning was 429 ±260, 616±371, and 551±296 g/d for methods 1, 2, and 3, respectively, which are considered satisfactory for this type of system.
