| Abstract | Summary.—The results of 18 total prostheses of the hip implanted in 12 patients with ankylosing spondylitis are presented. Nine males and three females with an average age of 36 years, were treated. The average follow-up time was 3.9 years (minimum 1 year). The indications for surgical treatment were: the untreatable pain, the faulty movements of the hip joint interfering with the activities ofdaily living or an association ofboth. From a clinical viewpoint 33% ofthe results were excellent, 44% were good and 22% were fair. In 39% of the cases the presence of heterotopic ossifications have been observed. |
