Abstract	Objective: To know if hospital nursery personnel are trained in mother breastfeeding. Participants and method: Observational study performed at the General Hospital of ISSSTE, Matamoros, Mexico from June 1 st to November 30, 2003. 84 nurses answered a test of 17 reactive, multiple options, closed and open questions related to the breastfeeding program. Nurses of all shifts and categories were included. Nurses with license, retired, and scholarship were excluded. The score for approbation was 6 or more, but for the good trained in the mother breastfeeding was 8 or more. The results are showed with descriptive statistic; middle, mean and mode. Obtained write consent was done, and the investigation committee approved the study. Results: The 58% of the hospital personnel was good trained, but although 91% approved the test. The 41% was considered not enough trained, and only seven are not trained. The results are showed with descriptive statistic; middle 7.36, mean 7.33 and mode 8.66. Only eight nurses did not answer the test. Conclusions: Almost 60% of the nurses in this hospital were considered good trained for mother breastfeeding. The scores demonstrated incomplete trained. Variables such as: having two o more children, do not work in morning shift, were the most common factors for not being capacitated. It is necessary change the structure of the course for the personnel training in this hospital, considering the workers rights.
