| Abstract | The performance of four systems used for post treatment of the effluent from UASB reactor has been evaluated. The systems were investigated with respect to removal of nutrients, pathogens, as well as carbonaceous matter over 12 months. The main objective of the post treatment was to produce a final effluent for unrestricted irrigation reuse. The investigated parameters were pH, COD, solids, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, helminths eggs and thermo tolerant coliforms. The effluents from the anaerobic filter, constructed wetland and rock bed systems presented a macronutrient concentration high enough for the most cultures cultivated in the northeast region. However, a thermo tolerant coliform concentration stayed above of the WHO recommendation for unrestricted irrigation. Only the effluents produced by polishing ponds were compatible with the WHO recommendation. |
