| Description | Journal: Clinical Microbiology and Infection The maintenance of an effective level of oral hygiene is the cornerstone of all attempts to prevent and control periodontal disease, and yet the widespread prevalence of the disease indicates the inability of most people to maintain a level of plaque control commensurate with periodontal health. The inclusion of antibacterial agents, such as chlorhexidine and triclosan, in oral care products has provided a means to improve oral health. Randomised, controlled clinical trials have demonstrated that the unsupervised use of a dentifrice (toothpaste) containing triclosan/copolymer significantly improves gingival health, prevents the onset of periodontitis and reduces further progression of tissue destruction. The delivery of such benefits has positive implications for the oral health of individuals and populations |
