| Description | Journal: SSRN Electronic Journal We empirically document the dynamic nature of rollover risk and show what determines banks' ability to manage such risk. Worsening expectations about bank's future profitability lead to a build-up of fragility in various ways: by shortening its debt maturity structure, requiring the bank to roll over debt more often, and by limiting the bank's ability manage both current and future liquidity needs. During financial turmoil, the need to roll over debt increases default risk only for banks that have limited access to new funds, whereas it has no impact for banks that can effectively manage rollover risk. |
