| Abstract | Objectives: To develop a visual tomographic map of involved lymph nodes levels corresponding to orophary ngeal, laryngeal, oral, and hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Methods: A retrospective study was conductcd. Patient’s demographics, staging, pathology, types of neck dissections, lymph nodes level distribution, and lymph nodes counts were recorded. Results:One hundred forty-six patients were included. Males were 120 (82.2%) and females were 26 (17.8%). Among them, 14 patients (9.6%) had hypopharyngeal cancer, 29 (19.9%) had laryngeal cancer, 84 (57.5%) had oral cavity cancer, and 19 (13.0%) had Oropharyngeal cancer. The average lymph nodes count was 26.6 ± 15.2 lymph nodes. For the hypopharynx. the commonest involved level was level-Il (64.3%) followed by level-Ill and level- IV (42.9% each). For the larynx, the commonest involved level was also level-11 (44.8%) followed by level-Ill and level-IV (31%. 24.1% respectively). For the oral cavity, the commonest involved level was also level-Il (46.4%) followed by level-I, level-Ill. and level-IV (39.3%. 33.3%, 11.9% respectively). For the oropharynx, the commonest involved level was also level-II (68.4%) followed by level-I and level-Ill (26.3% each). Conclusion: when performing an elective neck dissection for NO in oropharyngeal, laryngeal, oral, and hypopharyngeal cancer; surgeons should take into consideration the percentage involvement of each cervical lymph node levels to better design the procedure to improve outcome and minimize morbidity. |
