| Description | Journal: Physics World Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, who won the 1991 Nobel Prize for Physics, died on 18 May at the age of 74. Initially an expert in magnetism and superconductivity, he ceaselessly hunted for new and challenging areas in which to do physics, applying his expertise to polymers, liquid crystals, colloids and other forms of "soft matter". He also became fascinated by granular materials and, more recently, cell adhesion and brain function. |
