| Description | Journal: Physics World French companies expect to increase their internal research and development spend by only 1.5% in real terms this year, according to a Ministry of Research and Space (MRE) survey of R&D plans. This is considerably less than the 3.7% growth predicted for last year (in the MRE's first survey of this kind) and the ministry points to general sluggishness in the world economy as the cause; the French gross national product (GNP) is expected to grow by only 2.2% over the same period (with inflation at 3%). Staff numbers in R&D are also expected to increase by 1%, compared with a 3% rise last year, against a background of a 1.7% drop in total staff. Spending on external R&D is, however, expected to fall by 2% in real terms. |
