Description	Journal: Physics Bulletin In support of the proposal by M J Fulker (Physics Bulletin November 1972) for a discussion on 'Science, social responsibility and polities', some general considerations are outlined, followed by a suggestion for the scope of discussion. Science has departed from the 'ivory tower' days, when individual scientists choosing their own fields of investigation made contributions to knowledge 'for its own sake'.
