Description	Journal: Journal of Physics B: Atomic and Molecular Physics Perturbation methods used in the calculation of relativistic energies of atoms have been studied and it is found that the role of certain parameters in the perturbation expressions has been misunderstood by previous authors. The relationships between perturbation expansions corresponding to different approximations obtained by splitting the total Hamiltonian in different ways, are clarified.
