| Description | Journal: Journal of Physics C: Solid State Physics Simple valence-bond arguments suggest that a linear chain of boron atoms might be ferromagnetic. This hypothesis is tested through a perturbative calculation of the cohesive energy of an infinite chain, using a recently defined magneto-angular effective Hamiltonian, and through unrestricted Hartree-Fock ab initio calculations on even $B_{4}-B_{10}$ clusters. Both approaches conclude that the ground state-singlet for $B_{4n}$, triplet for $B_{4n+2}$-may be viewed as an antiferromagnetic coupling of triplet $B_{2}$ subunits. |
