Cross sections for some core-excited Na I quartet states

| Description | Journal: Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics Electron-impact cross sections for excitation from ground 3s$ ^{2}$S and excited $2p^{5}$3s3p$ ^{4}$S states to the lowest core-excited quartet states of Na I arising from the configurations $2p^{5}$3s3p, $2p^{5}$3s3d and $2p^{5}$3s4s are calculated and contrasted using a 12-state R-matrix method for energies from near threshold to 6 Ryd. In the threshold region resonance structure characterizes the cross sections with those from the $2p^{5}$3s3p$ ^{4}$S state dominating the corresponding ones from the ground state by at least two orders of magnitude. Significantly, the cross sections from the inner-shell $2p^{5}$3s3p$ ^{4}$S state are on the average comparable with or even greater than those from the ground state to the 3d$ ^{2}$D, 4s$ ^{2}$S, 4p$ ^{2}$P degrees or 4d$ ^{2}$D previously calculated. The results may have interesting implications for the Na I XUV laser. |
