Description	Journal: Physics Bulletin Optical design is frequently described as a 'black art' but subscribers to this view would have been surprised by the open-handed attitude of the contributors to The Institute of Physics Optical Group meeting on 'Optical design' held at Imperial College, London on 5 May 1983. In full view of a large audience, five of the leading exponents of 'the art' cast light on a wide range of design achievements with a frankness which should have resulted in their expulsion from the Magic Circle.
