Description	Journal: Journal of Physics A: General Physics We derive a generating function for the second moment of the distinct number of sites visited by an n-step lattice random walk. The formalism allows us to find asymptotic forms for the second moment as previously given in the mathematical literature using much more complicated techniques. The general technique can, in principle, be utilized in a derivation of higher moments.
