| Description | Journal: Physics World At a press conference in May 1969, a couple of months before the Moon landings, NASA announced that it would send a manned mission to Mars in 1984. But within a couple of years of that press conference, budgetary concerns completely altered the landscape for manned spaceflight. By 1984 the height of NASA's ambition was the Space Shuttle, which many critics regarded as a programme in search of a mission. The concept of a space station, suggested by NASA in 1983, seemed to provide a role for the shuttle, but it attracted little enthusiasm. |
