On the corrosion and infection resistance of the 316-type stainless steel coated with copper-titanium by plasma spraying

| Description | Journal: Materials Research Express The mixture of copper and titanium powders with different portions are accumulated on the stainless steel substrates by manual plasma spray system to improve anti-infection and anti-corrosion activities. Microstructure and phase composition of copper-titanium coatings with different ratios on the stainless steel (Cu-Ti/SS), copper and titanium powders are performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron scanning electron microscopy (SEM) accompanied with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Their antimicrobial performance is evaluated by the method of spread plate. Corrosion behavior of Cu-Ti/SS with different ratios in the simulated body fluid (SBF) solution is studied by using both potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests. The results show that the corrosion resistance of Cu-Ti/SS in SBF solution is more than that of the uncoated stainless steel (SS). It can be said that titanium and created titanium oxide prevents severe corrosion of the SS. On the other hand, Cu-Ti/SS coatings compared to SS have excellent antibacterial ability against Staphylococcus aurous and Escherichia coli bacteria. It can be said that copper, copper oxides and titanium oxide in contact with bacteria create a toxicity that results in the death of bacteria. The adhesion and hardness of Cu-Ti/SS are investigated by cross cut (TQC) and Vickers micro hardness (HV0.1) testers respectively. |
