| Description | Journal: Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics Spin-dependent interactions in the excitation of several higher excited states in the 4d, 5s and 6s manifolds of neon atoms have been inferred from observations of integral photon polarizations. The states were excited by spin-polarized electrons. The integrated Stokes parameters of , and of the decay photons from the states 4d, 5s, 5s, 6s and 6s were measured as a function of initial electron energy. Near threshold, electron exchange is significant in the excitation of the three triplet states 4d, 5s and 6s and weak core spin-orbit coupling effects were observed in the excitation of the other two J = 1 states for which the outer s-electron spin-orbit effects are zero. Similar results have been obtained for states from the 5s and 6s manifolds and the same excitation mechanisms for the excitation and coupling properties of these states are inferred. |
