| Description | Journal: Physics World Physics-based industries represent the most competitive sector of the UK economy. In terms of manufacture, exports and employment, aerospace, electronics, intrumentation and nuclear energy clearly emerged as the leaders in a 1992 Institute of Physics survey. However, even these face an uphill struggle. The forces on industry are like a pendulum, swinging between extremes yet subject to an element of chaos. Consider the sort of phrases used about industry – stop–go, profit–growth, regulation–competition, short-term–long-term. With all of these nonlinear relationships it is little wonder that industry is so complex. Against this background I want to explore the dynamics of the UK physics-based industries in the context of the world scene, in order to identify likely trends and the petitors, with imports increasing to meet the deficiency. |
