| Description | Journal: Journal of Physics F: Metal Physics Monochromatized XPS experiments show that the 5d level of Au diluted into Cd evolves from an atomic-like spin-orbit split doublet into energy bands as the number of nearest neighbour Au atoms increases. The rapid rise to higher energy of the antibonding-like portions of the 5d bands with increasing Au concentration is attributed to the nonorthogonality of the d orbitals on adjacent sites. |
