| Description | Journal: Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics The polarisation arising from the orientation of an assembly of permanent dipoles by a strong external electric field is treated by means of the Smoluchowski equation for the rotational Brownian motion of a symmetrical top. Two types of external field are considered: (i) a unidirectional field which is suddenly switched on at a time t=0, and (ii) a unidirectional field on which an alternating field is superimposed, both fields having been applied for a very long time. It is shown that the Laplace transform of the polarisation for case (i) can be expressed exactly in terms of an infinite continued fraction. In case (ii), it is found that the polarisation may be conveniently calculated as power series in the field strength by means of a recursion relation. |
