Description	Journal: Physics World The physical properties of thin films were first exploited back in classical times for ceramic glazes and the hardening of tools. But it was not until this century, and in particular the past 30 years, that advances in thin-film science have interplayed with those in related technologies. Not only do we now have a better understanding of the physics involved, but the application of novel structures and properties of thin films has provided an impetus for the rapid growth of high-technology industries. There is virtually no electronic or optical device in use today – domestic or technical – that does not involve thin films in some significant way.
