| Description | Journal: Journal of Physics C: Solid State Physics The results of measurements of the magnetic susceptibilities, and their anisotropy of $Eu(OH)_{3}$ single crystals between 300 and 21 K are reported here for the first time. Around room temperature, the observed value of the perpendicular susceptibility $K_{perpendicular to }$ (which is $4575*10^{-6}$ emu $mol^{-1}$) was larger than the parallel susceptibility K/sub /// and the anisotropy $K_{perpendicular to }$-K/sub /// was about 20% of the average susceptibility K. On cooling, the susceptibilities $K_{perpendicular to }$ and K/sub /// each increased at different rates and attained constant values below 80 K. Expressions for K/sub /// and $K_{perpendicular to }$ were deduced by considering the second-order Zeeman interaction between the different crystal-field (CF) levels, expressed in terms of four CF parameters. On substitution of the values of these parameters are reported from the optical study, the thermal behaviours of $K_{perpendicular to }$ and K were explained well but the thermal behaviours of $K_{perpendicular to }$ and K were explained well but the thermal behaviours of K/sub /// and the anisotropy $K_{perpendicular to }$-K/sub /// could not be explained. Consequently, further optical studies involving fluorescence and Zeeman spectra were performed to determine the exact CF levels of the sample. As the authors still failed to obtain a reasonable set of parameters to explain the anisotropy behaviour, anisotropic exchange interaction between the close-lying $Eu^{3+}-Eu^{3+}$ neighbours along the c direction was then considered as is done for $Eu_{2}O_{3}$. When the value of the effective anisotropic exchange parameter $A_{eff}$ was taken to be -5.2 K for $Eu(OH)_{3}$, better agreement between theoretical and experimental values was obtained. |
