Description	Journal: Physics World US space scientists ought to be feeling in reasonable spirits. Last month the physicist and engineer Michael Griffin was confirmed as NASA's new administrator by the US Senate. Meanwhile, the agency expects to launch the first Space Shuttle this month since the Columbia disaster in January 2003. However, the mood of the space-science community remains –as Science editor Donald Kennedy commented recently –"an odd combination of confusion, gloom, and struggle".
