| Description | Journal: Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter Metastable and stable phases in rapidly quenched, and quenched and annealed quaternary Al-Si-Mn-Fe alloys have been identified using electron and X-ray powder diffraction techniques. It has been found that the constituent phases in rapidly quenched specimens a $(Al_{6}$Mn), b $(Al_{82}Mn_{17}Fe_{1}$), c $(Al_{86}Si_{4}Mn_{10}$), d $(Al_{75}Si_{7}Mn_{14}Fe_{4}$), e $(Al_{78}Si_{4}Mn_{12}Fe_{6}$) and f $(Al_{75}Si_{6}Mn_{10}Fe_{9}$) are metastable icosahedral and decagonal phases and stable crystalline Al, $Al_{6}$Mn, alpha -AlMnFeSi and $Al_{13}Fe_{4}$ phases. The constituent phases in the quenched and annealed Al-Si-Mn-Fe specimens are crystalline Al, $Al_{6}$Mn, $Al_{11}Mn_{4}$, alpha -AlMnFeSi and $Al_{13}Fe_{4}$ phases. The relative contents of these phases are dependent on the composition of each alloy. |
