| Description | Journal: Physics World When Republican majorities were voted into the US Senate and House of Representatives in 1994, many political commentators feared that the scientific community would suffer. Fortunately many of these fears were misplaced. Funds for basic research have remained at much the same level as in previous years when the Democrats controlled the purse strings, although several big physics projects, notably the Tokamak Physics Experiment and the Advanced Neutron Source, have been cancelled. Moreover, the Republican majorities have tried to cut money for joint government-industry programmes to develop technology, and have partly succeeded. But both parties agree that the government should continue to finance fundamental work in science, from physics to medicine. |
