| Description | Journal: Physics World The South African government has approved the construction of the largest optical and infrared telescope in the southern hemisphere. The Southern Africa Large Telescope (SALT) will cost R100m (about £11.4m) and take five years to build. It will be used to search for extrasolar planets, to study the populations of nearby galaxies, and to examine the energy sources of quasars and active galactic nuclei. According to Tony Fairall, an astronomer at the University of Cape Town, the telescope will also be at the "cutting edge" in mapping the structures of the early universe. |
