| Description | Journal: Physics Bulletin Volume 1 N. L. Collins and D. Michie (Eds) Edinburgh: Oliver and Boyd. 1967 Pp. x + 278. Price £3 3s. Volume 2 E. Dale and D. Michie (Eds) Edinburgh: Oliver and Boyd. 1968 Pp. ix + 252. Price £3 10s. These two volumes are the results of symposia held at the Experimental Programming Unit, Edinburgh, in 1965 and 1966. The words 'machine intelligence' have different meanings for different people so I will say at once that the topics represented in these volumes cover a wide range; a few fringe on the avant-garde ('Will seeing machines have illusions?' by R. L. Gregory in Volume 1), but some are so orthodox ('The Compiler-Compiler re-examined' by R. A. Brooker and J. S. Rhol, also Volume 1) that it is difficult to see their connection with 'machine intelligence' at all. |
