Description	Journal: Physics World Nuclear weapons remain the most powerfulforce ever invented by humankind. They canbe constructed with either highly enricheduranium (over 20% 235U) or plutonium. Most modern nuclear weapons rely on acombination of fission and fusion, using theinitial nuclear release from a core of uraniumor plutonium to ignite a secondary fusion oflighter elements. The first nuclear weaponsdeveloped by the US had explosive yieldsequivalent to 10–20kt of TNT, while most oftoday's deployed weapons range from 100–500kt in yield. In all, there are approximately27600 nuclear weapons in existence.
