| Description | Journal: Physics World The US Department of Energy (DOE) needs to at least double the amount it spends on fusion energy research or change its current plans, according to a report from the Office of Technology Assessment (OTA). The US cannot afford to remain a partner in ITER – the next-generation tokamak being designed by Europe, Japan, Russia and the US – and also build the $700m Tokamak Physics Experiment (TPX) at Princeton. With the DOE intending to cut its overall budget by $10bn over the next five years, the fusion budget is unlikely to increase above its current level of $366m. |
