| Description | Journal: Physics World Italy has a strong tradition in particle physics that stretches back to Fermi and the "School of Rome" in the 1930s. Although there are no high-energy accelerator experiments running there today, Italy boasts one of the most impressive non-accelerator particle physics labs in the world. The Gran Sasso National Laboratory, a huge complex of experimental halls buried 1400 m beneath the Gran Sasso massif, is home to a range of experiments that are searching for hints of new physics beyond the standard model of particle physics. Evidence for cold dark matter particles, magnetic monopoles, proton decay or neutrino masses would be a major step in this direction. Such discoveries would also have enormous implications for cosmology. |
