| Description | Journal: Japanese Journal of Applied Physics Short range order in high T$ _{c}$ superconductors $Sr_{ x }La_{2-x }CuO_{4-y }$ and $Ba_{ x }Y_{1-x }CuO_{3-y }$ have been analyzed by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) on the Cu K-edge. The radial distribution around $Cu^{+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ ions in oxygen-deficient $Sr_{ x }La_{2-x }CuO_{4-y }$ is interpreted in terms of a modified $K_{2}NiF_{4}$ structure which is characterized by i) vacancies in the axial oxygen sites of $CuO_{6}$ octahedron and ii) the displacement of La(Sr) positions along the c-axis. In $Ba_{ x }Y_{1-x }CuO_{3-y }$, the radial distribution of oxygens around $Cu^{2+}$ and $Cu^{3+}$ ions indicates that average 4.8 oxygen atoms are present at 1.925 Å. A possible model is presented to describe the cooperative motions of oxygen atoms in the basal plane which are induced by the valence fluctuation of Cu ions. |
