| Description | During the Mexican–American War, the United States won a decisive victory and in 1848, Mexico ceded California and New Mexico, increasing America’s territory by more than 20 percent. Not all Americans applauded the gains. Abolitionists denounced the war as a plot to extend the country’s slave territory. The question of whether slavery should be allowed in the federal territories threatened to imperil national unity, so in the election of 1848 both major parties trod softly around the issue, preferring the safety of silence.
