| Description | The Mt Cagua hydrothermal system is centered on a young volcano which last erupted in 1860. Even prior to drilling, surface features indicated active magmatic input at depth, such as acid SO4-Cl hot springs at high elevation, enriched in both 18O and D with respect to local groundwater, and fumaroles discharging gases suggesting a highly oxidizing, immature source. The proportion of “andesitic” or arc-type magmatic water in the steam discharge is ≈65%. The drilling of a directional well, deviated towards the crater, showed that the magmatic-hydrothermal interface, where temperatures are >400°C, is confined to a small volume. Fluid inclusion and alteration minerals indicate that it is occupied largely by vapor and is connected to surface fumaroles via a vapor conduit. Magmatic volatiles released into the system rapidly partition into a brine and a gas-rich vapor. When released into water-logged microfractures, short-lived acid sulfate waters form and precipitate a corresponding alteration assemblage. The inferred magmatic fluid at Cagua, based on fluid inclusions, has a Cl content of 15 000 to 30 000 mg/kg, a CO2 content of 4 molal and high H2S. Through dilution and boiling this fluid forms the waters of the groundwater-dominated hydrothermal envelope adjacent to the magmatic-hydrothermal interface. Book Name: Water-Rock Interaction |
