| Description | This chapter describes some of the problems encountered when entering the field of high intensity laser-matter interactions. It also describes a new technique to measure the complex field amplitude of visible radiation. The determination of the phase and amplitude of the intense femtosecond pulse is an unavoidable issue which needs to be addressed from the start, if only from a very practical point of view. In order to generate short laser pulses, it is necessary to have a broadband amplifier medium, and an element in the laser cavity which can introduce a time varying loss mechanism to produce a source of modulation. In amplification, there is a particular risk of self-focusing increasing to a level where catastrophic damage can occur to the amplifier medium. Hence the technique of chirped pulse amplification was developed to reduce the peak pulse intensity during the amplification process. Book Name: Laser Sources and Applications |
