| Description | The presidential elections of the “Gilded Age,” the last quarter of the nineteenth century, were marked by a rough equilibrium between the two parties. Although besmirched by allegations of disloyalty during the Civil War, the Democrats staged a remarkable comeback to level the political playing field. Each party claimed approximately the same proportion of the electorate, and presidential contests were consistently close. In fact, in the elections of 1880, 1884, and 1888, the difference in popular votes separating the two major candidates was less than 1 percent. With the competitors so evenly matched and the contests decided by razor-thin margins, no candidate wanted to stick his neck out. Each presidential contender played it safe during campaigns, avoiding controversial issues and falling back on platitudes. Book Name: The Routledge Historical Atlas of Presidential Elections |
