| Description | In this chapter, the author focuses on the spatio-temporal dimensions of film in Maoist China to interrogate the multiple levels of community at work on the screen and in the practices of film screening in Maoist China. She explores the interplay between, on one hand, international and national textual communities and, on other hand, practices of community in localized spaces. The dialectic process informing filmic practice and textual communities can be seen in how localized practices of film projection units were informed by national and international filmic and extra-filmic textual communities. Notably, textual communities and filmic practices were deeply embedded in an understanding of film and film workers as agents of a modernization trajectory and the extension of state power. Recognizing the spaces of the textual communities and practices of film work in Maoist China and the attendant theories of human liberation, film projectionists also come to challenge scholars' acceptance of Raymond Williams's characterization of the image of the country.
