| Description | The social policy of apartheid was hypothesized to have resulted in high levels of marginalization and lower mental health in Black South Africans. The extent to which this has occurred was examined in a 1995 study of 370 Black South Africans, employing both qualitative and quantitative research methods. An exceptionally high endorsement of marginalization (relative to other modes of acculturation) was found, and low mental health was significantly associated with it. The context of apartheid and the consequences on Black South Africans closely parallels that of the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada. In addition to marginalization, Blacks in this study exhibited resilience, determination, and defiance as a response to their oppression, and discovered confidence, pride, and identity in overcoming the difficulties of apartheid. Apartheid seems to have resulted in a duality of consequences for Black South Africans. It appears that apartheid resulted in psychological damage, but it also seems to have elicited responses of resilience, coping and strength. This duality was also found among women who bear the added discrimination of sexism; gender analyses revealed that apartheid has more devastating effects on women, and that they are at higher risk for marginalization than men.
